Perth is a popular choice for international boarding because it offers a safe, welcoming lifestyle, strong education, and plenty of space for students to grow. Most families are looking for the same things: a secure environment, solid academics, genuine pastoral care, a community that feels like home, and clear pathways to university and beyond.

That’s exactly why St Mary’s is on the radar for so many parents. It is not just about looking good on paper. It is about how well a student is supported day to day, especially when they are far from family. In this post, we’ll break down what makes St Mary’s a strong choice for international students near Perth.

Why an All-Girls Boarding School Can Be a Great Fit

Choosing boarding is a big decision, especially when your child is moving far from home. That is why the right environment matters as much as academics. For many families, an all-girls boarding school can be a great fit because it is designed to help students feel confident, capable, and supported from day one.

In an all-girls setting, many students find it easier to speak up, take leadership roles, and try new things without fear of judgment. Whether it is leading a group project, joining a team, or putting their hand up in class, the culture often encourages girls to back themselves. That confidence does not just stay at school. It carries into university, interviews, and life.

Boarding also means students need strong pastoral care. The best schools do not just supervise. They genuinely look after students’ wellbeing. That includes routines, study support, trusted adults on-site, and a focus on mental health and healthy habits such as sleep, nutrition, balance, and friendships.

Most importantly, boarding should feel like belonging, not just living away. When students feel known, included, and cared for, they settle in faster and thrive, especially international students adjusting to a new country, a new system, and new friendships.

Where St Mary’s Stands Out in Perth

St Mary’s stands out near Perth for its high standards and supportive school culture. The school is built around clear values such as respect, integrity, compassion, courage, and aspiration. This helps students understand expectations and feel supported as they grow.

Academically, it is not a sink-or-swim environment. There are strong expectations, along with learning support for students who need it, especially as coursework becomes more demanding in the senior years.

Learning is not limited to the classroom. St Mary’s offers a wide range of co-curricular options such as sports, arts, clubs, and activities that help girls build confidence, make friends, and discover strengths beyond academics.

That balance of values, learning support, and a full school experience is what makes it a standout choice for many families.

Boarding Life: What Daily Living Really Looks Like

Boarding life is often more structured than many families expect, and that structure can be beneficial. At St Mary’s, the boarding house is set up to feel like a real home, with clear routines, adult supervision, and a strong focus on safety and wellbeing.

Weekdays typically follow a routine with school during the day, followed by dinner and evening study time. St Mary’s notes that prep time runs 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm from Monday to Thursday, giving students a regular block to finish homework and build good habits.

Many boarders also have access to tutoring and academic support, so they can stay on track with guidance when needed.

Practical support also plays an important role. Meals, laundry routines, and day-to-day care relieve pressure on students as they settle in. Weekends usually include downtime as well as optional activities or excursions, which help boarders recharge and enjoy Perth, not just study through it.

Support for International Students

For international students, the first few weeks matter because settling in involves more than academics. Students also need to feel safe and supported. St Mary’s makes this easier with a clear enrolment process for overseas students and expectations around English readiness and academic progress, so families know what is required upfront.

On the boarding side, there is a strong focus on helping new students settle. The school outlines a meet-and-greet style welcome that connects incoming boarders with the Head of Boarding, senior students, and younger boarders. This helps new students understand what moving in is really like. That peer connection can make a big difference when you are new.

If English support is needed, the best approach is usually a mix of language help and classroom support so students can keep up while they build confidence. St Mary’s also emphasises student wellbeing by ensuring girls are known, supported, and nurtured. This is especially important when students are far from family.

For parents overseas, regular communication is key. Updates, clear contacts, and a school culture that treats families as partners in a student’s care can make boarding feel far more reassuring.

A Safe, Student-Centered Environment in Perth

Perth is a great place for boarding because it is a livable city with a relaxed lifestyle. Families still want the essentials done well, including reliable transport, safe routines, and strong student support.

St Mary’s ticks a lot of those boxes. It is located in Karrinyup, a suburb of Perth, with access to public transport and a private bus service for commuting. Transperth also lists multiple school bus routes serving St Mary’s, helping families plan transport with confidence.

Just as important is wellbeing. St Mary’s publicly emphasises a student wellbeing approach focused on helping girls feel that they belong and supporting their development beyond academics.

For boarding families, feeling secure also comes down to policies and supervision. St Mary’s role descriptions for boarding staff highlight child safety expectations and screening requirements, such as a Working with Children Card and a National Police Clearance. This reinforces the school’s commitment to student safety.

The Right Choice Feels Like Support

St Mary’s stands out because it balances high expectations with genuine care. For international families, that matters. Safe boarding routines, strong wellbeing support, and a community where girls settle quickly and grow in confidence all contribute to a positive experience. For families seeking Perth boarding with structure, warmth, and clear pathways, St Mary’s is worth a closer look.
