Last weekend, I caught glimpses of the old and new Spain. Here is an account of my\u00a0cultural and gastronomic discoveries around Madrid over the last few days:<\/p>\n

Friday:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Museo de America – My Colonial History of Latin America class had a field trip in this\u00a0museum which sits on top of a hill overlooking Madrid. I\u2019d have to say that their most\u00a0interesting exhibit is the Escenas de Mestizaje. These paintings depicting Spaniards and\u00a0natives in interracial relationships and their consequent offsprings were painted in South\u00a0America during the Conquest were popular souvenirs for Spaniards to bring back home. In\u00a0all honesty, I was slightly offended although amused by them and I told my professor that it\u00a0reminded me of a bad episode of The Family Guy. It just goes to show that racial jokes have\u00a0come a long way and will probably never get old so there\u2019s no point in being offended. The\u00a0only thing curable is ignorance.<\/p>\n

Saturday:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Toledo – A day trip to Spain\u2019s former capital is a must to see intercultural influences between\u00a0the Muslims, Jews, and Christians. The synagogue will make you feel as if you were in a\u00a0mosque Morocco and the Cathedral which brought together all of Europe\u2019s best artists\u00a0during the Renaissance will leave the beholder awestruck.<\/p>\n

Teatro Joy Eslava – Although exhausted from an entire day of sightseeing, I could not stay\u00a0at home on a Saturday night! With two friends from Texas, Jennifer and Alicia, we partied\u00a0until the Metro opened in one of Madrid\u2019s oldest theaters turned night club. We were well\u00a0taken care of by two muy locas Madrile\u00f1as, Jennifer and Olga who is Alicia\u2019s intercambio. I\u00a0realized that college kids everywhere aren\u2019t that different. We all like American TV shows\u00a0and we love to dance to European house music.<\/p>\n

Sunday:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Palacio Real – I spent the afternoon exploring the Royal Palace. My highlights were the\u00a0chapel and the Royal Armory with suits dating back from the Crusades.<\/p>\n

Monday:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although not exactly the weekend anymore, every day seems like Friday in Madrid because\u00a0there\u2019s always something going on. After class, I wanted a relaxing place to write so I went\u00a0to Chueca to find a caf\u00e9.\u00a0Mercado San Ant\u00f3n – There\u2019s an actual market on the first floor where you can pick out raw\u00a0food, have it cooked however you want it, and served on their beautiful roof top terrace.\u00a0They also have an international selection of already prepared food on the second floor. I\u00a0recommend ordering tapa portions from various stalls so you can try a little bit of\u00a0everything as the prices are reasonable and according to weight.\u00a0Diurno – My favorite caf\u00e9 in Madrid is actually a DVD rental shop. Not only is the coffee\u00a0great, you get a friendly intellectual vibe. Chueca is Madrid\u2019s gay district but is popular in\u00a0general with all young locals so people at the next table readily welcome conversation.<\/p>\n
